Windy City…Sometimes
There was a time in my life, pretty recently, where I was really hyperfixated on Chicago. Maybe because during that time, it was a brand new city I had never visited and rather romanticized instead. Nevertheless, I was fortunate enough to visit Chicago a few times, and it still does remain one of my favorite cities even when the idealization wore off.
Chicago is called the "Windy City" for reasons that go beyond its breezy weather. Let’s break it down:
Chicago does experience frequent winds due to its location near Lake Michigan, with gusts blowing off the water and through the city. However, it isn’t the windiest city in the U.S. (cities like Boston (coming up soon!) often have higher average wind speeds)
The nickname likely began during Chicago's 1893 World’s Fair bid, as rivals accused its boosters of being "full of hot air."
The nickname also resonated during heated sports rivalries, highlighting the city’s passionate fans.
"Windy City" became a catchy nickname symbolizing Chicago’s energy and ambitious spirit.
