Acatenango Volcano

Volcán de Fuego, one of Guatemala's most active volcanoes, is renowned for its frequent and dramatic eruptions, often sending plumes of ash and smoke into the sky. Its name, which means "Volcano of Fire," perfectly captures the intense and awe-inspiring displays of nature's power that it offers. For those hiking nearby Acatenango, witnessing Fuego's eruptions is an unforgettable experience, with the sight of glowing lava illuminating the night sky as you see here.

Climbing Acatenango, one of Guatemala’s highest volcanoes, is a challenging yet rewarding adventure that takes you through diverse landscapes, from dense forests to barren volcanic slopes. Acatenango has a rich history, having last erupted in 1972, and is known for its twin peaks, Pico Mayor and Yepocapa. The real magic happens at the summit, where you're greeted with breathtaking views of neighboring Volcán de Fuego (pictured below!), which frequently erupts (every 15 minutes), creating a dramatic and unforgettable display. The sunrise at the top, casting a golden glow over the clouds and surrounding volcanoes, is easily one of the top five views I’ve ever seen, making the grueling steep ascent more than worth it.

(Below is the video of the lava erupting from Volcan de Fuego, captured by my dear friend that accompanied me on this trip)
